Creating a Family Hub: Diane and Jeff's Refacing Transformation with Kitchen Tune-Up
Diane and Jeff recently shared their Kitchen Tune-Up story, highlighting how their kitchen reface and island addition transformed their home and made it the heart of their family gatherings.
In 2019, Diane and Jeff purchased a former model home built in 2011. While the home was beautiful, it had a very Tuscan feel—dark colors, lots of gold, and heavy fixtures—that felt dated and lacked the bright, open look they envisioned. They wanted to modernize the space, especially the kitchen, and make it more functional for their large family. One of the biggest challenges was the kitchen island, which was simply a large cube with no storage—no drawers, no cabinets, nothing.
With three grown sons, their families, and six grandchildren all living nearby, Diane and Jeff’s home serves as the hub for family gatherings, including holidays, birthday parties, and football get-togethers. They envisioned a more welcoming and practical space where the grandkids could hang out, help with cooking, and spend time together. The old island just wasn’t cutting it, and they needed more storage, so they began exploring kitchen renovation options.
Having previously renovated a kitchen in their former home in the suburbs of Atlanta, they knew they wanted someone who could handle the entire project. One idea that excited Diane was the addition of a banquette. Kitchen Tune-Up also suggested adding shiplap over the stove, which became one of Diane’s favorite details.
The changes made by Kitchen Tune-Up brought much-needed functionality to Diane and Jeff's kitchen. Cabinets were added over the refrigerator, replacing the wine racks that were difficult to reach. The new island was designed to be easy to clean and made the perfect space for buffets when the whole family gathered. With the added storage, the kitchen became much more organized and efficient. Their grandchildren love spending time in the new kitchen—whether they’re cooking, making slime, playing with play dough, or doing science experiments, the space now works perfectly for their family’s needs. The grandchildren even have their own special snack drawer that they can easily access!

The old kitchen, with its butterscotch walls and dark wood, Diane felt was dated, and the updated space feels fresh and modern. The neighbors have even taken notice, and Diane and Jeff wouldn't be surprised if Kitchen Tune-Up receives future calls from them!
