Is Your Kitchen Ready for a Style Upgrade?

Does your kitchen meet your functional needs but fall short of your decorating dreams? Have you heard of cabinet redooring? It’s a great way to redecorate and update your kitchen without the headaches, inconvenience, and cost of a traditional remodel. Redooring refreshes kitchen cabinets that are in good shape but no longer your desired style or color. Redooring, and its close cousin refacing, mean the replacement of your cabinet doors and drawer fronts, while keeping and recovering the existing cabinet boxes.

A Perfect Candidate for Redooring

Let’s say you have twenty-year-old maple-stained cabinets with traditional raised panel doors and exposed hinges. Your layout is functional, your storage space is adequate, and the cabinet boxes are in good shape, but there’s no hiding the tired and dated look. And you would love nothing more than a fresh updated feeling with a mix of white and navy blue painted Shaker-style cabinet doors with hidden hinges and larger doors covering more of the cabinet frames. Redooring would be a terrific option for your kitchen!

Redooring vs. Refacing: What’s the Difference?

The redooring and refacing process both begin with the selection of a new door and drawer front style. While the finished look is the same for either redooring or refacing, the installation is slightly different. Redoored cabinets have repainted boxes and refaced cabinets have veneer covered boxes. Redooring is best for cabinet boxes with existing smooth finishes, like maple or cherry-stained cabinets or wood cabinets with a painted finish. Refacing works better on cabinets that have a texture like oak (where you may want to hide the texture) or a laminate or if you want the new look to be a stained finish. In our example, the kitchen currently has stained maple cabinets which work beautifully with redooring.

Designing Your Dream Kitchen

Once you decide to redoor, you can then finalize all the details. You’ve chosen a white-painted Shaker-style door for the perimeter base and wall cabinets and a gorgeous navy blue painted Shaker-style door for the island. You’ve also chosen gorgeous gold pulls for the doors and drawer fronts, new white quartz counters with navy blue veins and gold flecks and a stunning navy blue subway tile with white grout for the backsplash to pull everything together. The doors and drawer fronts are then ordered and custom-made to fit the exact specifications of your cabinets. You’ve also opted for a few configuration changes and upgrades by installing a trash pull-out in a convenient location, converting doors to deep drawers in a few base cabinets, putting in a new decorative hood above the range, and adding undercabinet lighting to best showcase the new tile!

The Installation Process

Once all the parts and pieces are ready to be installed, the fun begins! Our projects like this generally take just five days from start to finish, including the installation of the new counters and backsplash. The old doors and drawer fronts get removed on the first day and we begin prepping the cabinet boxes for the new custom mixed paint that will exactly match the new doors. Over the next few days, the boxes will finish being painted and the new doors (with soft close hinges) and drawer fronts (with soft close drawer slides) will get installed along with the pull-outs and decorative hardware. Once the counters and undercabinet lights are in, the backsplash gets started. By the fifth day, everything is installed and your new kitchen is a reality!
