5 Ways to Add Color to Your Kitchen Without a Remodel
Adding fresh colors to your kitchen is an easy way to update the look and feel. Introducing colorful home design trends like fashion will make your space feel more current. From small doses to big statements, here are five ways to go about a colorful refresh:
- Start with a few new accessories in earthy or woodsy tones or colors you like. There are lots of great online and in-person resources for colorful kitchen accessories. Stores at every price point, like Home Goods, Target, Anthropologie, Bloomingdales, CB2, West Elm, Sur La Table, and Burke Décor, all have fun offerings that you can mix with what you currently have. How about some new placemats, dish towels, or cloth napkins? A new rug or mat in front of the sink or under the dining table? Or can you mix patterned cereal bowls, mugs, or drinking glasses with your everyday plates? Or a big serving bowl to leave out on your counters or table? Mix and match to create a personalized kitchen that only you have!
- How about some art in the kitchen? You likely spend a lot of time in your kitchen, so why not hang some great pieces that make you smile? Anything protected by glass will be okay (make sure to get conservation glass if the art will be exposed to direct sunlight). Vintage movie posters, blown-up travel photographs, kids’ art, pieces picked up on travels—anything can make a great addition to your kitchen’s look.
- If it’s been a while since you painted your kitchen walls, why not choose a new shade for a fresh coat? Even just painting one wall with a punchier color can help a kitchen feel more updated. Earthier tones are having a moment and there are warmer shades of every color. If your kitchen is open to other rooms and it’s too hard to change the wall color, get creative and see if there’s something else you can paint, like a pantry door or your kitchen chairs. Get some tester pots or order peel-and-stick samples from a company like Samplize, and try out a few options before you commit.
- I wouldn’t recommend doing this yourself, but if you have wood cabinets that are in decent shape, you can have them painted any color you like. Deep browns and greens are super popular right now, but any color (or mix of colors) you love can work. Blues, grays, whites, and creams play well with many other colors if you want a neutral mix or like neutral paired with colorful pops of accessories or accents. Live with some samples for a few days and look at them at different times of the day to ensure you’ve chosen a flattering shade.
- Changing out your counters and backsplashes or adding a backsplash are terrific ways to add color, pattern, and texture. It may take some searching, but you can find backsplash tiles to freshen up your existing counters. And don’t forget to be thoughtful about the grout color – sometimes, it’s a great way to pull everything together. You may be able to tackle a new backsplash yourself with some YouTube videos and some advice from an expert at a tile store! Bring pictures and dimensions with you and ask for help choosing the right type and scale of tile for your space.
