Straight Outta the ’60s: Kitchen Trends That Stuck Around
Rewatching Mad Men and some Andy Griffith episodes has sparked our interest in the 1960s aesthetic. While my husband thinks bringing back bench seats in cars could be interesting and I love looking at the beauty and fashion of the era, it inspired me to explore which kitchen trends were popular back then. Quite a few trends are currently out of fashion, such as aluminum countertop trim and color-coordinated appliances, but check out these elements that are still in style today:
- Avocado green, canary yellow, and burnt orange – Although yellow and orange aren’t currently popular colors for kitchens, green has been in for a couple of years. For example, all-green cabinets or only the lower or uppers as an accent.
- Natural wood – This was popular in the 1960s and is becoming a popular choice for cabinets this year. White oak and walnut are great choices for 2025.
- Open layouts – More open kitchens were happening in the 1960s, and that trend still continues today.
- Slab doors – These continue to be a fashionable choice for doors and drawers as they look sleek and modern (even if they were popular 75 years ago!).
It’s fun to see that quite a few 1960s kitchen trends continue to be popular today. Which one is your favorite?
