2012-07-16 - Kitchen Tune-Up Owners Recovering After Colorado Wildfire Destroys Home
It has already been over two weeks since the Waldo Canyon Fire burned through Colorado. The wildfire is contained and the majority of evacuees have returned to their homes. Except, not everyone has a home to return to.
Just ask Bruce and Lori Morgan.
Bruce and his wife, Lori were on vacation when the fire started in the mountains above their Colorado Springs home. Bruce immediately booked a flight to return home. When he arrived, he had just over one hour to pack up some of his family’s personal belongings as the mandatory evacuation notice went out. “I had to quickly go through parts of my family’s life and decide if it was okay that particular items would no longer be part of us,” stated Bruce. “I keep thinking back to things I should have grabbed, but there wasn’t enough time.”
He was right. There wasn’t enough time. “People were yelling from the center of our cul-de-sac that a wall of fire was rolling down the hill toward us . . . that we had to get out NOW,” remembered Bruce. "The wind was howling and the air was full of heat and burning ash. I moved as fast as I could without looking back,” he said. “I drove out as the ash made it as dark as night.”
That was it. Within a short time, the fire had swept through the neighborhood and destroyed the Morgan’s home along with 346 others in the Mountains Shadows subdivision. “Seeing the destruction was worse than in any movie - and it wasn’t a movie, it was our neighborhood,” said Bruce.
The Morgan’s home wasn’t the only thing that was affected by the fire. Their home-based remodeling franchise, Kitchen Tune-Up of Colorado Springs, also took a hit. “The amount of calls and emails from friends, family and other franchise owners from across the country offering their support has been incredible,” said Bruce. The Kitchen Tune-Up franchise system has set up the Morgan Family Fund with Great Western Bank where anyone can donate money to help the Morgan family as they start to rebuild their home and business operation. David Haglund, Kitchen Tune-Up founder and president will personally match up to $5,000 of the funds donated. “Kitchen Tune-Up isn’t just a franchise system,” stated Haglund. “We are a family and families take care of each other. We will do whatever we can to help get the Morgan’s back on their feet.”
Despite the fire being contained, the work has just begun for the residents of Colorado Springs. “We may have lost our home, but our family is safe. The most important thing is not our things, but our family,” said Lori Morgan. “We are getting up on our feet again and are grateful for many great friends and a great community.”
“Many prospects ask what qualities make great franchise owners,” said Jeff Dorn, Kitchen Tune-Up’s Senior VP of Operations. “Resilience is one quality above all that we see with successful franchisees. The Morgan’s have been Kitchen Tune-Up owners since 1994 and are certainly an example of dedication, resilience and success and they will continue to thrive.”

2012-07-02 - Military Veterans Find Success as Kitchen Tune-Up Franchise Owners
Why do military veterans make outstanding franchise owners? The answer is simple for Kitchen Tune-Up Founder and President, David Haglund, “A common thread among service men and women is an excellent work ethic and strong commitment to following a system.” Currently, Kitchen Tune-Up has 155 franchise territories, 28 of which are owned by military veterans. Senior Vice President of Operations, Jeff Dorn, is also a veteran who served eight years in the Army.
In the past year, numerous businesses and franchises have made a push to recruit veterans with a wide range of excellent programs. Kitchen Tune-Up led the way in recruiting veterans back in 2010. In 2012, Kitchen Tune-Up launched another opportunity for veterans. Their 2012 program waives $35,000 of the standard $40,000 franchise fee for qualifying honorably discharged veterans. This is a great opportunity for anyone who has considered owning their own business. Overall, this program provides the opportunity to purchase a home remodeling franchise for an initial investment of only $5,000 with financing options available.
Eric Clement of Lewisville, Texas is the first recipient of Kitchen Tune-Up’s 2012 Veterans Program. Clement served in the United States Navy from 1984 - 2008. Prior to being awarded a Kitchen Tune-Up franchise, he owned his own photography business while attending DeVry University. “Kitchen Tune-Up spent quality time to make sure I’m on the right track. I’m so glad to be part of the family!” said Clement.

2012-06-27 - Kitchen Tune-Up Selected as 1 of 50 Top Franchises for Veterans by World Franchising Network
OAKLAND, CA (June 15, 2012) - The World Franchising Network has compiled and published its third annual list of the “50 Top Franchises for Veterans.” National kitchen and bath remodeling franchise, Kitchen Tune-Up was selected to the list, which was featured in the June 15, 2012 issue of USA TODAY in the Franchising Today section.
The World Franchising Network selected 50 franchisors from over 400 companies requesting evaluation for inclusion in the article. There was no cost to participate in the survey. Each participating franchisor was required to submit a completed questionnaire. The questionnaire noted both the absolute number of and the percentage of the total number of franchise units owned by veterans, as well as the number of veterans in senior management that earned over $60,000 per year.
“The steady increase in veteran representation within the overall franchising community over the last several years has been extremely encouraging,” stated Rob Bond, founder of the World Franchising Network. “It certainly is clear evidence of the intrinsic values, invaluable experience learned through life's lessons and the exceptional work ethic of our military veterans. Hopefully, this trend will continue so that these fine young men and women can test their skills in franchising."
Kitchen Tune-Up is doing their part in 2012 by offering full franchises to military veterans for only $5,000 (regular price $40,000). By reducing the initial fee, it provides the opportunity for new franchisees to invest in opening and marketing their home-based kitchen & bath remodeling business. Any honorably discharged veteran from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard or National Guard is eligible to apply. Interested veterans can fill out an information request form at http://kitchentuneup.com/veterans.html.

In April, the Kitchen Tune-Up Home Office was flooded with photos of beautiful kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects! Kitchen Tune-Up locations from across the country sent us their best Tune-Up, Cabinet Redooring, Cabinet Refacing, Custom Cabinets, and Bathroom Remodeling projects. The competition was tough, but two projects stood out from the rest to earn the 'Project of the Month' award, which recognizes the most outstanding kitchen or bath makeover across the nation!
April's 'Project of the Month' Winner is a Cabinet Refacing project completed by Mike, Janice, and Jesse Dugan of Kitchen Tune-Up in Norton, Massachusettes.
"This white kitchen received a new look in Birds Eye & Quarter Sawn Maple. Roll-out trays and waste units were installed." - Mike Dugan, Kitchen Tune-Up of Norton, MA, franchise owner
Runner-Up honors went to Tom and Debi Taube of Kitchen Tune-Up in Charlotte, NC. They completed a beautiful Custom Cabinet project.
"The clients wanted their cabinets to extend to the ceiling and didn't lke their built in pantry. So we stacked the upper cabinets to the ceiling and added glass doors. We also added undercabinet lights. The built in pantry was replaced with corner cabinets on top, lazy susan on the bottom and a cabinet pantry with roll out trays. New granite tops and a tile backsplash finished it off."

2012-04-25 - Kitchen Tune-Up Aims to Help Veterans Become Business Owners
Kitchen Tune-Up is currently offering a program that supports veterans seeking to own their own home improvement franchise. The company is waiving over 80% of their $39,995 franchise fee, making the investment only $5,000 for honorably discharged veterans. Financing options are available for up to $4,500 for qualified applicants.
“This is the second program of this kind that we have offered,” said Kitchen Tune-Up founder and president, Dave Haglund. In 2010, the company awarded several franchises to veterans as part of a special incentive, and the first was to Frank Skubel of Tallahassee, Florida. Before being awarded a Kitchen Tune-Up franchise he was employed with a large telecommunications company, had been laid off and was in search of a business opportunity. “The business has exceeded my expectations,” said Skubel. “I’m enjoying the satisfaction of making great transformations in the kitchens and baths of my customers, and being my own boss is a great benefit that I haven’t had previously.”
“We are providing veterans with a business opportunity when they transition to civilian life or seek a career change, at a very low initial fee,” said Kitchen Tune-Up founder and president, Dave Haglund. “There are many franchisors offering great programs this year, and we’re proud to play a small part in showing appreciation of our military veterans. Service men and women have proven their leadership and teamwork skills, and we know they will do a fantastic job of stimulating their local economies by utilizing this unique home improvement business.”
If interested, applicants should contact Heidi Morrissey by phone at 800.333.6385 or email franchise@kitchentuneup.com. They can also fill out the interest form at: www.kitchentuneup.com/veterans.html.
