2009-06-01 - Morrissey’s Latest Certification as Life Coach Helps Strengthen Kitchen Tune-Up Franchises
Aberdeen, SD– Heidi Morrissey is part of the second generation involved in the family-owned Kitchen Tune-Up franchise system. As vice president of sales and marketing, she commands a big presence on the face of the organization. Now, as a Certified Life Coach, with a concentration in business and sales, through the ICF accredited Coach Training Alliance, she is putting that face forward to help individual franchisees reach their goals quicker using coaching techniques to encourage forward momentum.
Working with a full caseload of twenty franchise owners at a time, she customizes the sessions based on each owner’s needs. Identifying what issues might be holding the business back from reaching its full potential, such as sales roles, operational needs or even procrastination, time management skills or just focusing goals on the part of the owner.
“The process is pretty complete.” Morrissey says “Before we even begin, we identify goals the owner wants to work on. We then drill down to prioritize them and make a plan for working on the most important first.” By allowing the franchisee to define their own needs, Morrissey believes they embrace the outcome more than they would otherwise. “They have to be fully present in the process. As a coach, I hold them accountable for completing regular action items, ultimately bringing them closer to their goals.”
This philosophy is supported from the base of the coaching concept. According to the accrediting organization’s website; Business coaches are people developers. They don’t tell their clients what to do; they ask questions. Their message is, “You’re smart. I’ll be a mirror to help you look inside yourself, so you can not only solve this problem, but increase your capacity to successfully manage all areas of your life.”
Sessions began with the first franchise owners in March and so far, results have been impressive. One satisfied participant, Florida franchise owner Gary Stoltz, says that his experience has been great! "The coaching from Heidi has been instrumental in helping me determine where I need to focus my attention in order to enhance and improve my business. I feel that the coaching she is doing for me shows why buying this franchise was a smart investment. This is the kind of support every franchisee needs and as an owner I applaud Kitchen Tune-Up founder, Dave Haglund, for taking the initiative to provide a certified coach who is showing me how to make my business become even more successful."
Typically broken out into four weekly sessions, each coaching period seeks to address one topic only. Sectioning out the goals and objectives this way allows the owners to feel a real sense of accomplishment, a tangible checklist they can see and celebrate as they achieve each one. This makes it easier to keep looking to the next goal, the next success. By focusing energies this way, it keeps the franchise owner motivated to keep achieving their goals.
Morrissey credits her commitment to life-long education for the motivation to pursue and achieve this coaching credential. This February, she was also presented with the CFE (Certified Franchise Executive) title after completing a three year course of study and training from the International Franchise Association. This association is the foremost expert on franchising, franchisee relations and franchise law. Both achievements are now helping Kitchen Tune-Up franchise owners, which gives Morrissey much satisfaction. “I know I’m making a difference, being impactful, and that’s what I wanted to do.”
In order to earn the certification, Morrissey had to participate in an intensive six month training process comprised of live teleconferencing, online media and interactive software applications. Facilitating live coaching sessions throughout that time period gave real-world experience to the students as well. In addition, the curriculum also focuses on business development and marketing so newly certified coaches may successfully operate their professional coaching practice.

2009-05-08 - New Online Design Tool Improves Consumer Experience
Aberdeen, SD– Kitchen Tune-Up, the leading kitchen and bath remodeling franchise, has released an online design tool consumers can access direct from their website at kitchentuneup.com, clicking on Design Tool at the top of the page. The free tool has been created to let visitors interchange areas such as cabinets, countertops, appliances, flooring and backsplash tiles, even faucets and hardware among others.
Company founder, Dave Haglund, says the tool is expected to speed up the decision-making process for customers. “By being able to play around with different looks and materials, they can fine-tune their likes and dislikes before our franchise owners even arrive for the in-home consultation. Color is especially important. Just by knowing what colors the customer likes best means our franchises can bring samples of the materials that are of most interest to them. This saves time for everyone and gives the client a good place to start their project.”
For instance, a homeowner with a 20 year old kitchen of oak cabinets and a laminate countertop can now see what cherry hardwood and solid surface stone countertops would look like. It allows the consumer to try out many different combinations right at their own computer. Many who have tried the tool have expressed surprise that what they thought they liked and wanted turned out to come in second to other looks once they could actually see them. Jan Thompson of Charlotte, NC, recently had her kitchen remodeled “I always thought I liked white cabinets but then I saw what the honey color looked like and I knew exactly what I needed for my new kitchen.”
The tool is completely free and lets users email a picture of their designed kitchens to others for viewing. This comes in handy for spouses who want to share their design with the other but may not be home at the same time. “Anyone can use the tool”, adds Haglund, you don’t have to be working with a Kitchen Tune-Up franchise already to see for yourself what your new kitchen could look like.” This isn’t useful just for new cabinets, either. “Refacing also changes the outward appearance of cabinets without ripping everything out and starting over but it’s affordable, too.” Photos of actual Kitchen Tune-Up projects as well as more information on services available in your area; can be found online at kitchentuneup.com.

2009-04-03 - Kitchen Tune-Up Gives Greater Chicago Food Depository A Face Lift
CHICAGO – Taking in hundreds of pounds of donated food at the Greater Chicago Food Depository fills employees with joy, unfortunately, the lack of proper storage space and shelving units was creating more anxiety than excitement. With cases of bananas, canned foods and soups pouring in daily, a solution to the storage situation was quickly becoming a priority. Coming to the rescue, Kitchen Tune-Up of Chicago stepped in to lift spirits and help the Greater Chicago Food Depository come up with a solution to the daunting storage issue.
Scott and Virginia Hanson, Chicago Kitchen Tune-Up owners, donated their services and time to install a one of a kind shelving system in the pantry which will double the storage capacity and hold the hundreds of pounds of food necessary. The new system runs from floor to ceiling and allows workers to adequately view what food is available for packaging.
“We were thrilled that we could help out such a wonderful organization,” said Scott Hanson, co-owner of Kitchen Tune-Up. “The Chicago Food Depository receives so many donations that aide in supplying food to those in need, but this time they were the ones in need and we were honored to have the opportunity to help.”
Not only was a custom shelving system put in place, Kitchen Tune-Up then installed the old cabinets in a separate room in need of storage. While the fact that the renovation was beautifully completed in only two days seems shocking to some, it is a skill that Kitchen Tune-Up prides themselves on. Their efficiency and ability to complete projects in a timely matter has always been a trademark.
“Although the renovation process only took two days, the final product and its benefits will last a lifetime, “added Hanson.

2009-03-05 - Denver Area Kitchen Tune-Up Wins Kitchen of the Year Award from National Manufacturer

Denver, CO – The Highlands Ranch location of Kitchen Tune-Up, the leading kitchen and bath remodeling franchise, has won the Kitchen of the Year contest from a national partner custom cabinet manufacturer. Owned by the Liberatore family; Dan, Noah and Christian, the business has been operating locally since 2005.
The grand prize awarded to the Liberatore’s was a custom home entertainment center complete with a 42 inch television on electrical lift. The total prize is valued over $7,000.00.
In order to be eligible for the prize, the business must first have won a 2008 Kitchen of the Month award, which the Liberatore’s did in April. The twelve monthly winners were then judged by company owners, management and employees to determine the overall winner.
For this project, painted biscuit doors with chocolate glaze were used. The customer had existing granite that they wanted to keep. This was an ideal situation for Kitchen Tune-Up’s capabilities, according to Noah Liberatore. “We were able to reface the lower cabinets and replace some of the upper cabinets to improve functionality and attractiveness. In order to give the kitchen a more finished look we added decorative raised end panels and both crown and light rail moldings.” Aging drawer boxes were also replaced with more modern soft-close hardware.
“It was a great honor to win this award.” added Liberatore. “Especially for a project like this one, where we were able to use all of our services to create the perfect look for our customers. Being able to mix refacing, new cabinets, and even a couple of custom pieces really made this a dream kitchen.”
The Highlands Ranch franchise was also the winner of a 2008 Silver Sales Increase award presented by the franchise system at their annual convention, January 26th in Las Vegas.
To schedule a free, in-home consultation with the Liberatore’s, call (303) 721-1393 or write nliberatore@kitchentuneup.com.

2009-02-27 - Kitchen and Bath Remodeler Ranks First in Category for the Nineteenth Year
Kitchen Tune-Up announces their placement as first in category by Entrepreneur Magazine, making this the nineteenth time in their more than twenty year history they’ve attained the coveted spot.
“We’re very proud” said Kitchen Tune-Up’s founder Dave Haglund “We’re proud to be recognized by the franchising community as the best in our field. We know we’re a strong system and treat our customers well, but it feels good to have an outside source like Entrepreneur validate that as well.”
Entrepreneur ranks the franchises based on their financial strength and stability, growth rate and size of the system. Also considered are the number of years a company has been in business and the length of time it's been franchising, startup costs, litigation, percentage of terminations and whether the company provides financing. Financial data is analyzed by an independent CPA. In the overall rankings, Kitchen Tune-Up placed number 180 out of more than 2200 systems registered in the US.
Craig Green, director of franchise development for the company, talks about what the top ranking means for franchise sales. “While we love to tell prospective owners that we’re number one, we back that up with a family-like environment that ensures our franchisees have the support they need to succeed. That’s the real win in our book. I tell everyone looking at our franchise that we score so high, but it’s our franchisee’s validation that really sells for us. This just gives us motivation to continue building and make our system even stronger so we can be around and in first place for the next twenty plus years.”

Aberdeen, SD– Heidi Morrissey, vice president of sales and marketing for Kitchen Tune-Up franchise system, has earned the CFE (Certified Franchise Executive) designation. Morrissey received the title during the International Franchise Association’s 49th annual convention, February 16th in San Diego.
A subsidiary of the IFA Educational Foundation, the Institute of Certified Franchise Executives conducts the program to enable individuals the opportunity to supplement their knowledge, gain industry recognition and take advantage of peer-level networking. The ICFE offers a wide range of continuing education programs for professional development in the area of franchising. Designees who complete the program, which is comprised of a prescribed course of study, and meet all requirements, earn the title. The mission of the Institute of Certified Franchise Executives (ICFE) is to enhance the professionalism of franchising by certifying the highest standards of quality training and education.
Morrissey said “The work I did on the certification really solidified my understanding of franchising. The courses have given me lots of new tools that I’ve already been able to put to work in our system. In addition, I’ve also developed a strong network of professional relationships with other franchise executives that will be very useful for our company in the future.”
Morrissey joined Kitchen Tune-Up in May of 2003 at the urging of her father, Kitchen Tune-Up founder, Dave Haglund. She had worked as a teacher after college and had been running her own home-based business for 11 years when her father convinced her that her inherited entrepreneurial skills could best be used in the family business.
Within her first two years at KTU, she helped coordinate and activate the National Advertising fund and then facilitated a full system rebranding effort (the first in eighteen years). In recent years, she has added personnel to the sales and marketing department, allowing her to get out of the day-to-day tasks and concentrate on growing and strengthening the KTU system.

2009-02-16 - Kitchen Tune-Up Announces Advanced Home Improvement Professional Certification Program

Aberdeen, SD– Kitchen Tune-Up, the leading kitchen and bath remodeling franchise, announces the launch of an advanced home improvement and remodeling certification program for their franchise owners. The program is designed to ensure the highest level of professionalism and expertise in the minor home remodeling industry.
CHIP – Certified Home Improvement Professional is a designation that can be earned by individual owners at basic and master levels. Points toward certification can be earned for successfully completing specialized training, serving on task forces or the system’s Advisory Council, conducting training webinars for other owners as well as upholding the company’s eight Trust Points, winning customer service or other national awards and years of experience as a Kitchen Tune-Up owner. Once certified, the business can use the CHIP logo in their advertising and on their website and they receive a distinctive pin to be worn during client consultations or at community and industry events. At the master certification level the owner also receives a badge with the master level logo and their name inscribed on it. Owners have three years from the time they register in the program to complete the certification process. To retain certification, owners must earn new points annually, assuring their continued education and growth in the field.
The certification program was rolled out at Kitchen Tune-Up’s annual convention, January 26th in Las Vegas, NV. The franchise system awarded honorary CHIP certifications to eleven longtime franchise owners who were deemed to have earned the basic certification level “many times over” according to company founder Dave Haglund. “These are the best of the best as far as running their businesses and making their customer’s happy. Some have been in the system over fifteen years and all have had some type of service on a council or board. We consider these owners to bleed orange (a reference to the company brand) and would do just about anything to help their fellow owners.”
The following franchise owners received their certification and pins; Marty Ceranec, Downers Grove, IL; Bob DiToto, Rehoboth Beach, DE; Mike Dugan, Norton, MA; Janice Dugan, Norton, MA; Glenn Keller, Bartlett, IL; Bruce Morgan, Colorado Springs, CO; Lori Morgan, Colorado Springs, CO; Ron Reichert, Rehoboth Beach, DE; Stu Reid, Fairfield, CA; Dan Tokarski, Centreville, VA and Mary Tokarski, Centreville, VA.

The honor was presented at Kitchen Tune-Up’s annual convention, January 26th in Las Vegas, NV. To qualify for this award, a franchise must have won a Project of the Month award in the previous year. 2008-10-14 - Green Ways To Revitalize A Kitchen
(NAPSI)-Homeowners who remember the "three Rs" could makeover their kitchens, protect the Earth and save some green in the process.
Reconditioning, redooring and refacing a kitchen-known as a kitchen tune-up-rather than rebuilding from scratch, can significantly cut remodeling costs, save energy and keep discarded material out of landfills.
Cabinet refacing and redooring, for instance, lets you revitalize your kitchen with new doors, drawer fronts and matching veneer, while keeping your existing cabinet boxes. Similarly, reconditioning lets you tune up existing cabinets, doors and woodwork to look like new, without the cost or environmental impact associated with replacing them.
"In a refacing service, a kitchen that has plain oak cabinets can be made cherry or maple, or even a European-style 3D laminate material, all while helping the environment," says Dave Haglund, founder of Kitchen Tune-Up, a company that reconditions, redoors and refaces kitchens.
Going Green
To help spread the word on green remodeling, Haglund's company started the "Plant a Tree" campaign in 1993, when it planted 25,000 seedlings to promote reforestation.
Fifteen years later and in its 20th year as a franchise system, the company has teamed with the Arbor Day Foundation to promote their stance on resource sustainability.
With each tune-up, redooring or refacing service completed by its franchises through the remainder of 2008, the company will donate a tree in the client's name to be planted in a U.S. National Forest.
The Arbor Day Foundation notes that national forests have areas in immediate need of reforestation due to wildfires, infestations and disease.

2008-10-10 - Kitchen Makeovers

(NAPSI)-If you've been cooking up ways to add value and style to your home, you might want to look at your kitchen.
Homeowners who undertake just a minor kitchen remodeling project recoup, on average, 83 percent of their costs when it comes time to sell, according to Remodeling Magazine. And if you're planning on staying in your home, a quick kitchen makeover can help you enjoy the room for years to come.
You can control kitchen-project costs by using companies such as Kitchen Tune-Up to modify existing cabinetry rather than completely redoing it. The company refaces kitchen cabinets and doors, or simply "tunes up" existing wood surfaces to look like new. If some heavier work is in order, the company can also add islands and other features or completely remodel a kitchen with new cabinets, countertops and more.
An added bonus: The company offers discounts off their services to clients who purchase new appliances at select Best Buy locations throughout the U.S.
2008-09-15 - Cooking Up 20 Years Of Franchise Opportunities
(NAPSI)-The recipe for a successful franchise often includes a service that saves a customer money in a unique way. For example, for over 20 years, one of the nation's leading kitchen remodeling service companies has been breathing new life into wood in homes and businesses.
Winner of Entrepreneur magazine's No. 1 remodeling franchise company for 19 years, Kitchen Tune-Up is a national franchise system specializing in cabinet refacing, redooring, new kitchen cabinets and the original one-day Tune-Up.
The owner of a cabinet distributorship, Dave Haglund, founded the company in 1986. While in a customer's home, he noticed that the kitchen was starting to look a little run-down but did not need to be entirely replaced. The result was an idea for a remodeling company.
Haglund began franchising the business in 1988. In this family-owned company that prides itself on what it calls a "familylike culture," franchisees recently showed their appreciation by honoring the founder and his wife with a two-week cruise to Norway.
The company's commitment to customer service is built around what it calls eight "trustpoints":
• guaranteed estimates
• guaranteed work
• workers arrive on time
• the work area is cleaned daily
• messages are returned in 24 hours
• they strive for harmony with the customer's daily routine
• customers are told what workers will do before they do it
• franchise owners listen carefully, tell it straight and keep their promises.
These trustpoints are what set their customer service apart from other remodeling franchise operations.
The company also prides itself on being ecofriendly. By retaining kitchen cabinets, renewing and reconditioning the wood or by replacing doors and drawer fronts instead of the entire box, the company says that consumers eliminate crowding of the country's landfills and it conserves natural resources.
The Web site explains that the company's Tune-Up service is a preservation-friendly process. The cabinets are left intact, so no major waste is produced, yet the original wood is restored to a like-new luster and appearance. In redooring or refacing, the main boxes are left in place while just the doors and drawer fronts are replaced, so major waste is also avoided and resources are saved.

2008-07-14 - Kitchen Tune-Up Promotes Eco-Friendly Home Improvement
The kitchen and bath remodeling franchise, Kitchen Tune-Up, is encouraging homeowners to do their part to reduce waste and conserve natural resources by reconditioning or refacing their cabinets instead of throwing them away. Originally begun in 1993, the “Plant a Tree” campaign had 25,000 seedlings planted in the Black Hills of South Dakota. According to the company, the reforestation effort embodies the spirit of the company and its founder, Dave Haglund; one of hope, renewal and perseverance.
Fifteen years later, and in its 20th year as a franchise system, Kitchen Tune-Up is celebrating by teaming up with the Arbor Day Foundation to promote their stance on resource sustainability. To bring attention to alternative remodeling options, with each "Tune-Up", redooring or refacing service completed by its franchises through the remainder of 2008, Kitchen Tune-Up will donate a tree in the client's name to be planted in a US National Forest. The Arbor Day Foundation notes that National Forests have areas in immediate need of reforestation due to wildfires, infestations and disease.

The Kitchen Tune-Up website explains that their Tune-Up service is a preservation-friendly process. The cabinets are left entirely, so no major waste is produced, yet they end up with a near-new appearance. In redooring or refacing, the main boxes are left in place while just the doors and drawer fronts are replaced so major waste is also avoided and resources are saved, but the cabinets can look completely different from what was there before. “In a Refacing service, a kitchen that has plain oak cabinets can now be cherry or maple, or even the European style 3D laminate materials, whatever the client wants.” says Haglund.
Heidi Morrissey, vice president of marketing and sales for the franchise, said they will be recognizing the homeowners with more than just the tree. “Each person who participates in this program will receive a personal greeting card from us and will have their name entered on our online gratitude page, located at kitchentuneup.com. We believe that people should be honored for their efforts and this is just a real small way that we can let them know we appreciate their business.”

2008-05-05 - Kitchen Tune-Up Announces Strategic Cross Referral Partnership with Retailer Best Buy
In an alliance announced today, Kitchen Tune-Up and Best Buy Co., Inc.(NYSE:BBY) have begun a strategic relationship to assist each other’s clients in a cross referral program. Kitchen Tune-Up is the number one home improvement franchise and Best Buy is the third largest retailer of appliances in the U.S. In these positions, the two companies aim to give a full remodeling experience to their customers.
As part of the program, Best Buy Certified Appliance Specialists educate clients who want to make changes in their kitchens by purchasing new appliances such as a professional cooktop range or a larger refrigerator. If the customer needs help making room in their home for the additions, Kitchen Tune-Up can do that but they’re also available to help a customer reface their kitchen cabinets, add islands and other features or fully remodel a kitchen with new cabinets, countertops, etc. In turn, Kitchen Tune-Up offers additional discounts off their services to clients who purchase new appliances from Best Buy.
Jeff Dorn, the franchise system’s senior vice president has been working on the partnership concept since fourth quarter of 2006 and stated that the company is very excited to roll out this program nationwide “This partnership with Best Buy helps consumers who want to upgrade their kitchens, but don’t think they can because they don’t have the room. With Kitchen Tune-Up’s ability to modify existing cabinetry it opens up a whole new range of options for them.” Dorn added that this also streamlines the process for the customer. “We’re a one-stop solution now. You don’t have to go to an appliance store and then shop around for a contractor or look at doing it yourself; you can go to a Best Buy store, get help from appliance experts and get in contact with the most-trusted home improvement company in the country, all at the same location.”
In addition to the customer referral partnership, the two companies are developing a program to be offered as a franchise through Kitchen Tune-Up’s existing system. While it’s a new concept, staffing custom cabinetry vignettes inside Best Buy store locations, the franchise system brings twenty years of operational experience to the table. This experience has taught them to look for the right type of personality and motivators that drive a potential new owner. Heidi Morrissey, vice president of marketing and sales said “We’re looking for someone who can follow a system but is also comfortable with a higher risk level and is inspired by being a pioneer in a business model. It’s a distinct person who is successful in a new concept like this, that’s who we’re talking to about buying a Best Buy Vignette Program franchise.” Locations are currently open in Montgomeryville and Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania.
